Placing a Template

Last updated

License feature: Dashboard Templates

Templates reach a dashboard through the Template widget (palette section Layout).

  1. Open a dashboard in the editor.
  2. Add the Template widget. It starts at 6 × 6 grid cells; resize it like any widget.
  3. In the property panel, choose the template under Choose a template….
  4. Choose One or Per machine, then fill in the parameters.
  5. Save the dashboard.

Everything about the placement lives on the widget, so Duplicate Widget duplicates the placement, and exporting the dashboard carries it. Choosing a different template clears the parameter values, because two templates' parameters are unrelated.

One

The placement renders the template once, stretched to the widget. You fill in each parameter yourself — for a UDT instance parameter you pick the machine from a list ("P-101 — Booster Station") narrowed to the UDT that parameter accepts, so a pump faceplate is never offered a conveyor.

If the template has no parameters, the panel says "This template has no parameters, so it shows the same data wherever it is placed."

Per machine (the repeater)

The placement renders the template once per matching UDT instance. You give it a filter rather than a list:

SettingEffect
UDT typeRequired. Which type to repeat over
DeviceOptional. Narrow to one device (All devices)
Name containsOptional. Case-insensitive text match on the instance name. % and _ are ordinary characters
OrderName, natural order (Pump 2 before Pump 10), Name, A to Z, Name, Z to A, Oldest first
Popup templateOptional drill-down — see Drill-Down Popups

Every UDT instance parameter on the template is supplied automatically, so those disappear from the panel. The other parameters (a caption, a color, a tag) stay in the panel, and every copy uses the values you enter there.

A filter rather than a list is the point: adding a machine later needs no dashboard edit at all. Create its UDT instance and every repeater matching it picks it up the next time the dashboard is opened or reloaded.

The panel shows "Matches n instances right now." as you type, so a filter that matches nothing is visible while you configure it.

How repeated copies are laid out

Copies flow left to right and wrap, with the instance name above each. Each copy is sized from the area the template's widgets cover on its canvas — about 50 px per column (at least 120 px, at most 480 px wide) and 52 px per row (at least 80 px tall) — and copies stretch to fill each row. When there are more copies than fit, the widget scrolls. Make the widget wide and tall enough for the rows you expect on the screen it will be shown on.

Ordering

The default is natural order: "Pump 2" comes before "Pump 10". Plain alphabetical ordering puts Pump 10 first, which reads as a fault on a wall display.

Instances that are switched off are skipped

A disabled UDT instance is not being polled, so a faceplate for it would show values frozen at whatever they were when it was switched off. Repeaters leave those out. A One placement you pointed at a specific instance still shows it.

What each state on screen means

These are deliberately distinct:

On screenMeaning
A spinnerStill loading. Wait
"Choose a template in the property panel."The widget has been added but not configured
"No UDT instances match this filter, so there is nothing to show."The repeater is working; nothing matches right now
"This repeats per machine, but no UDT type is chosen yet."The filter needs a type
"name has no widgets yet."The template is empty
Removed "Template deleted"The template was deleted
Removed with a parameter messageA parameter target is gone — see Template Parameters
"Could not load this template. It will retry."The request failed. It is not gone; it will come back

Public dashboards and kiosks

Placements render on a public dashboard opened without signing in, including a kiosk screen. The appliance sends that screen only the templates the dashboard itself places — and the symbols, menus and UDT instances they draw with — so nothing in the library that is not on the screen is reachable without signing in. Make the dashboard private again and the screen stops getting any of it.

Repeaters resolve on the appliance, so a wall display shows the same instances, in the same order, as a signed-in browser.

Inside a container

A Template widget added to a Container is configured the same way: select it with the settings icon in the container's list, and its placement settings appear in the property panel.
