Appliance Network Settings

Last updated

The Appliance page (admin section of the sidebar) has five tabs: Hardware I/O and Wiring Guide (see Built-in Hardware), and — for admins only — Network, System and Certificates. This article covers Network.

The Network tab drives NetworkManager (nmcli) on the appliance. On a machine without NetworkManager it shows Network management unavailable.

Interfaces

Every interface except loopback is listed with its device name (eth0, wlan0, …), type, MAC address, state (no link when no cable or carrier), and the current IPv4 address. The interface your browser is connected through is tagged this connection.

Friendly name: type a name (e.g. Ethernet 1 — Plant LAN) and save. Names appear in the network scanner (via Ethernet 1) and are stored in the configuration database; they do not change the interface itself.

Set a static IP address

  1. On the interface, choose Static IP (the other option is Automatic (DHCP)).
  2. Fill in:
FieldExampleNotes
IP Address192.168.10.50Required for static
Prefix24CIDR prefix length (24 = 255.255.255.0). Required for static.
Gateway192.168.10.1Leave empty on an isolated machine network
DNS (comma-sep)192.168.10.1, 1.1.1.1Comma-separated
  1. Click Apply.

If you are not connected through this interface, the change is applied straight away.

If you are connected through it, the button first changes to Confirm & apply with a warning: You are connected through this interface. If the new settings are wrong you'll lose access — but the device will automatically revert after 60 seconds unless you confirm. Then:

  1. Click Confirm & apply.
  2. If the address changed, open the appliance at the new address in the same browser within 60 seconds.
  3. A dialog New network settings are live counts down. Click Keep these settings.
  4. If you cannot reach it, do nothing — the previous settings are restored after 60 seconds (Can't click this because you lost connection? Do nothing…).

Switching to Automatic (DHCP) clears the static address, gateway and DNS on that connection. The field under the form shows the address DHCP gave (Current: … (assigned by DHCP)).

After an IP change the appliance re-issues its own HTTPS certificate so the new address is covered, unless you installed your own certificate (see HTTPS Certificates).

Wi-Fi

On a wireless interface, the Wireless networks panel lists networks after Scan (up to 20 seconds): SSID, signal and security, with connected on the current one. Enter the Password and click Connect. If you are connected over that Wi-Fi interface, the same 60-second confirm-or-revert applies; if joining fails the previous network is restored immediately and the error is shown.

Things that surprise people

  • One pending change at a time. Starting a new change on a management interface cancels the timer of the previous one.
  • The revert timer lives in the API service. If the API restarts or the appliance reboots during the 60 seconds, the change is kept.
  • Only IPv4. IPv6 settings are not shown or changed.
  • The interface needs a NetworkManager connection profile. An interface without one fails with No NetworkManager connection profile for eth1. Plug in a cable (NetworkManager creates a profile), or contact Scada.Ink support or your integrator if it still fails.
  • nmcli runs through sudo. The installer adds a sudoers rule; if it is missing, changes fail with a sudo password error.
  • Every change is recorded in the audit log (appliance.network.ip, appliance.wifi.connect, appliance.network.confirm); failures also appear on the Errors tab under module appliance.
