Navigation Bars

Last updated

A navigation bar is a menu you build once under Navigation and place on as many dashboards as you like with the Navigation Bar widget. Editing the bar changes it everywhere it is shown.

Open Navigation in the sidebar (under Visualize, /navigation). Building bars needs the editor or admin role.

Creating a bar

  1. Click New bar.
  2. Enter a Name (unique, ignoring case) and choose Orientation: Horizontal (across the top) or Vertical (down the side).
  3. Click Create. The bar is selected on the right.
  4. Click Add entry for a link or Add dropdown for a group, fill each one in (below).
  5. Click Save. Unsaved changes shows until you do.

The bar's name and orientation cannot be changed after creation in this version.

Entry settings

FieldDescription
LabelText on the menu. Required — saving fails with "Every entry needs a label."
TypeDashboard, Custom page, External URL or Dropdown
TargetChoose a dashboard… / Choose a page… / the URL. An External URL must not be blank
LevelEveryone, or the minimum security level needed to see the entry
▲ ▼ and binReorder or remove

A Dropdown holds entries added with Add to this dropdown. Only one level is allowed: a dropdown cannot contain another dropdown.

Placing it on a dashboard

  1. Add the Navigation Bar widget (Controls). Its default size is one row across the full width.
  2. Choose the bar in Navigation Bar (the list shows name and orientation).
  3. Save the dashboard.

For a custom page, select the bar and click Copy shortcode, which copies <scada-widget widget="navbar" navBarId="3"></scada-widget> with the right id. The id is also shown beside the bar's name.

Who sees which entries

The appliance decides what each viewer's menu contains:

  • An entry with a level is shown only to users who hold that level or a level nested beneath it in the security-level tree (holding a level includes its parents; a role can also imply a level). Admins see everything.
  • An entry pointing at a dashboard the user may not view is hidden.
  • A dropdown whose entries are all hidden disappears.
  • If nothing is left, the widget shows "Nothing on this menu is available to you."

Hidden entries are absent, not grayed out, so a user is not told a dashboard exists that they cannot open.

Deleted targets

Deleting a dashboard or page does not delete the entry pointing at it. The entry stays and is marked (Removed) in the menu (grayed, not clickable) and highlighted on the Navigation page with "This entry points at something that has been deleted. Repoint it or remove it."

Where entries lead

Entry typeOpens
DashboardFor signed-in users, the dashboard in the app, opened ready to use (not in the editor). On a public screen viewed without signing in, the dashboard's public view, /view/<slug>
Custom page/view/page/<id>, the page without the app around it
External URLA new tab, marked with an arrow icon

Note: Someone viewing a public screen without signing in only sees entries for dashboards that are themselves public.

Deleting a bar

Select it, click the bin and confirm. Only an admin can delete a bar, so the bin is shown only to admins. If the delete fails, the reason is shown at the top of the page. Dashboards showing a deleted bar show "This navigation bar is unavailable."

On a public dashboard, an anonymous viewer also sees "This navigation bar is unavailable.", because menus are resolved per signed-in user.
