Vision: failed-part images and the Camera widget

Last updated

License feature: Machine Vision

The first question after a bad part is what it looked like, and a frame that has been discarded cannot answer it. A vision device can keep the annotated image of inspections on the appliance.

Keep failed images

In the camera card:

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Keep failed imagesKeep failuresKeep failures: an image is kept only when a judged tool fails. Keep every inspection: every inspection — for finding a fault, not for running. Keep nothing: nothing is written
How many to keep2001–5,000 images
Disk budget (MB)2001–20,000 MB

Whichever limit is reached first, the oldest images are deleted. The newest image is never deleted, even if it alone exceeds the budget. Changes apply on Save.

  • The kept image is the annotated one — regions, detections and results drawn on — as a JPEG (quality 80). On a multi-camera device the views are placed side by side, labeled.
  • Beside each image a small JSON file records the verdict, program, time (UTC) and each tool's results.
  • With Keep failures, an inspection with no judged tool is never kept.
  • Tuning on the Vision page never writes images, whatever the mode.
  • An image that cannot be written (disk full) is logged; the inspection carries on.
  • Images are written as YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS-mmm-fail.jpg (UTC) in the appliance's data/vision/captures/<device id> folder. The device's last_capture tag holds the latest name.

The Failed parts panel

Shown on the Vision page unless Keep nothing is chosen. It lists the 40 newest images (refreshing every 5 seconds) with a green or red border, time and a tooltip summarizing each tool's result. Click one to see it full size with Pass or Fail, the UTC time and each tool's result.

Clear all deletes every kept image for the device. Admin only — it destroys the evidence of every failure so far. It is useful after commissioning, when the archive is full of parts being fiddled with.

Warning: Images live only on the appliance. They are deleted when the device is deleted and are not included in a configuration backup. Treat them as recent evidence, not as quality records. If you need to keep them, copy them off the appliance on a schedule.

Camera widget on a dashboard

The Camera widget shows the most recent kept image from a vision device — not a live video feed. With the default Keep failures it shows the last part that failed; set Keep every inspection if the screen should show every part (and size the disk budget for it).

  1. Edit a dashboard and add Camera from the widget palette (display widgets).
  2. Bind its value to the vision device's last_capture tag. The device is taken from the binding. If you do not bind it, set Vision Device (if not bound) — but then the widget has no capture name to show, so binding is the normal way.
  3. Choose Fit: Contain (default, whole image visible), Cover (fills the tile, crops) or Fill (stretches).
  4. Tick Show capture name to show the file name under the image.

The widget fetches a new image whenever last_capture changes. It needs a signed-in viewer — inspection images are not public, so a kiosk or public dashboard shows "Sign in to view camera captures". Other messages: "No capture yet" (nothing kept), "That capture is no longer stored." (pruned or cleared), "Bind this to a vision device’s last_capture tag" (no device). See Dashboards.
